abstract
A practical training method using an Engine Room Simulator (ERS) has been introduced as an effective training for the students of marine engineering course at maritime institutions, especially, since the adoption of 1995 amendment to the STCW Convention. The authors have introduced the STCW Convention and Codes, the contents of IMO Model course 2.07 and the Standard for certification of ERSs by Det Norske Veritas. In this paper, the current state of training using ERSs in Japan and overseas is compared, and the directivity and possiblity of educational training using ERSs is discussed.
